Carried Away
“Carried Away” is a film adaptation of Jim Harrison’s book, “Farmer”. The story follows Joseph Svenden, a 47-year-old man who lives on his family farm with his ailing mother. Joseph also works as a teacher at a small two-room schoolhouse with Rosealee, his lover and the widow of his best friend. However, Joseph’s lack of college degree puts him at risk of losing his teaching job at the end of the school year when the district expands into his town.
In the midst of these concerns, Joseph finds himself drawn to his 17-year-old student Catherine. Their relationship quickly turns romantic and both find themselves in a passionate love affair. However, Joseph’s relationship with Catherine becomes a catalyst for a deeper crisis as he tries to reconcile his feelings for her with his responsibilities towards Rosealee and his mother.
As the story unfolds, Joseph must confront his previous mundane life and decide how he wants to live the rest of it. He must face the challenges of love, loss, and starting anew. It is a powerfully emotional story about the moments in life that define us and the second chances we may get along the way.
